Helen Tkachyk Obituary

On Tuesday evening, February 24, 2026, Helen passed away at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 92.

Helen was born to Stephen and Katherine (Kachur) Pidkowich on April 28, 1933, in Krasne (Wynard District), Saskatchewan. Following the death of her parents, Helen and her siblings, Peter and Steve, lived with her sister, Mary, and her husband, John B. Kachur. Helen grew up on the farm, and later in her life she went to Sacred Heart Academy in Yorton, Saskatchewan.

Helen worked in Saskatoon for a while for a dentist and then later made her way to Winnipeg to find work. She worked at Eatons Mail Order for a few years. After her first child, she became a stay at home Mom and worked very hard to make everyone happy.

She then met her husband Walter Tkachyk in 1955 at the UNF hall on Main Street, and they married on December 29, 1956 and lived on Aubrey Street in Winnipeg. They had 4 children, Brian, Brenda, Cathy and janice and then later moved to Windsor Park and resided there for 61 years. She wanted to stay in house as long as she could.

Helen was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Ladies League at St. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Parish for over 50 years. Held the position of President of the Ladies League and for many years, was President of the 50 Plus Club. She taught Ukrainian Language to young children of the parish. She was very involved for many years with the Ladies Auxiliary at the Holy Family Nursing Home. Helen spent many hours volunteering at the church pinching perogies, making cabbage rolls and doing crafts with the ladies. When asked, she always said yes. She loved spending their time there and together with Walter they met great friends.

Helen was always working on crafts. She embroidered, crocheted, kniteed and most of all she loved to sew. She made all her children's clothing, Baton costumes for the girls, and most of the time stayed up all night getting these tasks done. She was a real night owl. She would be very tired, but never complained and just got it done. She loved to window shop and touch every piece of material in stores.

She was a wonderful cook and also liked to bake, paint Easter eggs, and she was famous for her birthday cakes. Everyone loved them, and she decorated them so nicely with lots of love and detail. A little bit of a perfectionist.

Helen was a very strong loving wife, mother, and grandmother and had a great deal of patience. She went through a lot during her life, losing her mother at 1 year old and her dad at 7. Raising 4 young kids as Walter worked out of town for many years. Last fall, she recently endured the pain of a fractured spine. Had surgery and recovered to go back home at 92 and continue on. She enjoyed with Walter watching the Winnipeg Jets, the Blue Bombers and curling. Even after Dad's passing, she still stayed in tune with the teams.

She leaves to mourn her son Brian, daughters Brenda (Jerry), Cathy (Gary), Janice (Rob), 6 grandchildren... Tim (Cheslsey), Mark, Christine (Matt), Nicholas, Luba (Dustin) and Tony (Brynn), Sisters-in-laws Doris and Pat Tkachyk, Brother-in-law Adam Sontag and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Walter, grandson Keith and her sister Anne (in infancy), sister Stephania her mother and father, her sister Mary (John), brothers Dr. Peter Pidkowich (Mary) and Steve Pidkowich (Irene), half-brother David Pidwich; nephew Allen Kachur; sister-in-law Victoria pidwick, brothers-in-law Tony Tkachyk (Mary), Roman Tkachyk (Nelda), Matt Tkachyk, Steve Tkachyk, and sister-in-law Marthas Sontag.

Rest in peace mom. You are with Dad again, and you finally get to meet your mother.

Vichnaya Pam'yat (Forever remembered)
